In terms of redesigning the scale for the future--materials and ergonomically--I wouldn't change a thing, perhaps a screwdriverless way to insulate the battery contacts. Building in an LED light thermometer is also an option--or a motion-sensitive (or trip-wire) alarm for added security while traveling? I should work for Bond as Q! I tested a scale repeatedly using a heavy suitcase and found it to be very precise.
I have managed to make countless overseas trips without ever owning a little scale before. However, that was the golden age of travel when a few extra pounds of luggage didn't matter, meals were given out to everyone on the flight, and everyone tried to be polite to one another--all the time.
I received this in perfect conditions and were able to test it just a week after I received it, the accuracy of it is amazing, with the weight that the counter scale gave while I was doing check in and the weight that the Tarriss scale gave, the difference was only about +- 0,2 lbs. The built off the scale is beautiful, as well it looks like it will last a long time. The only minor issue is that it takes a little bit too long to lock the weight of the bag, is around 8 to 10 seconds, while you get a steady weight. I recommend this scale to frequent flyers, especially the ones that likes to buy a lot of stuff on their trips so you do not get charged for overweight.
I researched all of the digital luggage scales available on here, and I picked this one for several reasons. One important reason was how responsive Customer Service responded to customer questions about the product. It arrived on time, nicely packaged, in perfect condition, with great (easy to understand) instructions. I immediately tried it out, and LOVED it. I also ordered one for my adult daughter who is a professional speaker and travels all over the US. She also loves hers. Small, compact and sturdy, easy to pack for travel.
Been using this for 3 years now - on the same battery - and it has worked great. The looping strap makes it easy to weigh any type of suitcase, duffle bag, whatever.
Since I haven't had it very long, I don't know how long the batteries last. The manufacturer sent a lot of helpful emails, including one that recommends turning it off after you use it, rather than waiting for it to turn itself off. When choosing a scale, I went with the one with the highest ratings. These online ratings are the biggest help. I feel like I owe it to the community to pay back by adding my own experiences.
I have tried several other luggage scales, but this is the first one that delivered on what it is supposed to do. Other luggage scales seem to have one problem or another. My last scale had problems once it went over 30 pounds... and, it seems my bags are always over 30 pounds. This scale had no problem with the weight and it's sleek design made it easy to weigh. An extra bonus was it's small size makes it easy to pack into a side compartment just before you leave. That way you have your scale with you when you repack for your return trip. If you need a luggage scale, this is the one I would recommend.
I've pre-travel test driven this scale and am in love. Why you ask? Let's start with the sleek design. It has a smooth brushed metal finish; it provides an easy to set weight pref, i.e., standard to metric or vice versa. It also has an easy to read display panel (which will also display battery level ), and will pack well for traveling.
I just returned from Albuquerque which was my first trip since purchasing the luggage scale. First about the scale, I couldn't recommend this strongly enough. The grip is perfectly conformed to your hand which makes it super-duper simple to attach and lift. Boom, your reading is digitally displayed so you don't have to "line up" a line to a weight. Light but feels VERY durable... you can just tell when things are built to last. Got it right away for my upcoming trip.
Purchased this to replace a mechanical scale I previously bought that my son took to college. Was a little Leary about buying a digital scale. Used it on several trips and it works very well. Well constructed, easy to use, easy to read and much smaller/takes less space than my mechanical scale. Appears to be very accurate when compared to airline scales at airport. Nice features like the auto off and manual off functions. Also displays in KG and Lbs. I have not used it to weigh anything greater than 50 lbs yet (rated at 110 lbs) but given its size it would be hard to imagine anyone picking up something that heavy with the small handle. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase and would purchase again or recommend this to a friend in the market for a small, compact luggage scale.
A portable luggage scale in essential if you want to avoid heavy baggage fees at the airport. In the past I've used the cheap, round ones with the inaccurate needle which are better than nothing but they're hard to read and invariably the suitcase ends up breaking them when the needle gets stuck. After going through about 3 of those I decided a week before an international trip that I needed to upgrade to something more professional and reliable. Read the reviews and ordered this one so it came the day before our trip to England. I really love this little scale. I keep it in the pocket of my carry-on so its always handy. I used it both ways...many times. You just set it once to kilos or pounds then each time you use it, it remembers your preferred weight reading. Its easy to read with its big digital letters. It has a handy strap to wrap around the case handle. And is very accurate. I just smile when I see the passengers at the airport with their suitcases spread open on the floor transferring the contents...because that used to me, lol. This little gadget is worth its weight in gold
Why have I not reviewed this? I've bought six of them now. One is for me, one is in my guest room so that guests can weigh their luggage, and four have been given as gifts.... all well-received. This scale is nice. The hook on the strap makes it easy to attach to any bag. If you can carry it, you can weigh it with this thing.
One reviewer has noted that these scales have a small screw to secure the battery compartment; indeed, they do. And you want this. I bought my first of these to replace a Lewis And Clark brand travel scale in large part because the battery door kept coming open thus forcing me to search the corners of my suitecase for the small battery. Hotel front desks generally have small screwdrivers to loan (people often need them to tighten eyeglasses). But, I have yet to change a battery in one of these.
i'm a frequent flyer and rarely worry about luggage weight b/c i just figure i'll pay the extra if i go over (which has never occurred). however, for my flight to antarctica, the luggage weight restrictions were very strict and at the last minute, decided to buy this luggage scale just to see how much weight i was carrying. unfortunately, each time i weighed my luggage, it would change by .5-1.5 lbs (for the exact same piece of luggage) and we were so limited with the amount of weight we could bring, i needed every ounce to count. luckily, when my expedition group weighed my luggage with their 'official' scale, i was able to store my excess luggage at the hotel while we were in antarctica so my plan was to count my losses and return the scale when i returned home. i received an email survey from the company and told them my experience and their representative not only refunded my scale, they sent me a new one - and when the post office lost the new one they sent, they immediately sent another one (we used a different address this time) and the new one works perfectly. (which made me really happy b/c the scale itself is very well designed and lightweight and i love the overall look of it) so all of this is to say, with all electronic devices, you should purchase them ahead of time to test it out especially if you're depending on them for something important. don't be like me and wait until the last minute...but if you do, i hope you're lucky enough to buy from a company like this that stands by their product and will do their diligence to ensure you get what you paid for. highly recommend!
I like this scale a lot. It's beautifully made. I feel I can give it 5 stars.
Here's a tip for travelers who don't want to deadlift fifty pounds (a suitcase hanging from their hand scale while it calculates the weight). Hitch a piece cord around the scale's handle. Use a broom handle (or sturdy monopod) for leverage, placed through the cord. Support one against something slightly taller than the scale strap + suitcase then lift up using the object (couch arm etc) as a fulcrum. An alternate method is to but the suitcase on a box and do the same thing using a cane, crutch, shaft of an ice axe, baseball bat, or the leg of a chair--then lift up, then push the suitcase off the box so it can be suspended by the scale. Another method is to use a short stick held between two people.
It weighs almost nothing and is very small, so I can slip it in the outside pocket of my suitcase. I checked it against my other scale when I bought it--some airlines are very strict--and it seems to be accurate. My secretary liked it so much I gave it to her and bought myself another one. My only misgiving was that it says it is good to 50 lbs, which sounds like enough because that is usually the limit. However, on a recent flight on Meridiana, I was allowed only one bag, but up to 70 lb. As far as I can tell, this scale does work above 50 lbs, even thought their literature limits it.
This is something everyone who enjoys traveling should have. The sleek, ergonomic design fits so comfortably in your hand. I'm very impressed with the quality of such an affordable piece of equipment. This thing is built to last. It's so easy to use. You just wrap the strap around your suitcase handle, push the on button and see the zeros, then lift the luggage off the ground. As soon as it stabilizes, literally a couple seconds, it locks the weight in the easy to read LCD screen. Done!
It is not that heavy itself, so you can pack it into that 49# suitcase without worry. I have used this a lot in situations where we are bringing products from home back to where we are currently living. It makes it very easy to manage weight limitations to avoid excess charges. Once a long time ago - before I started weighing bags - we had to remove items from a suitcase at check in, never again. It is pretty accurate as well, can pack up to the limit with no worries.
After using this scale for over a month to weigh dozens of parcels we were shipping due to a big move across country, I am sold on both the product and on Tarriss. I would absolutely buy again! Thanks, Kari, for doing such a fabulous job of support!
This is the second luggage scale I have. The first one got compressed in my bag and the screen damaged; was a very cheap one. So I decided to get a new better one; reading reviews, I opted for this, very happy with the decision. This is a very good, simple, accurately, and well-constructed item, and surely you can put it in a compressed bag without any problem (I have done it several times!). There are some scales that have backlight, believe me, backlight is only useful for draining battery (the old cheap one had backlight and had to change battery often). Regarding accuracy, scale it is really very accurate. I have set several times my luggage with the scale to 23 kg max that usually travel companies impose, when I got to the airport to check in scale reading were exactly 23 kg. This device is a must have when traveling if you don't want to have surprises in airports and not pay extra fees for overweight. Helps you distribute the items you are carrying between your luggage and your carry so each bag is within flight rules. It is a really small and weightless item compared with the benefits it can give you; it really worth carry with it. I surely recommend getting scale.
My wife and I do a bit of traveling, we especially enjoy escaping to warmer climates during the winter months. Now I'm more of the throw the overnight bag together and go, but my wife on the other hand is what you would call your classic over-packer. No more over-weight bags at the airport for me, I'm done having to stuff some of her things into my bag to get on the plane. And the scale is so small and lightweight it fits right into the pocket of my overnight bag. If you're looking for the perfect little traveling companion, I give this scale two thumbs up. I'm very pleased.
Given the outrageous fees airlines are charging for overweight bags, one of these scales can pay for itself in one trip. If you choose to throw the scale in, it will add 3.5 ounces (almost a quarter-pound). But, just knowing the weight of your bag when you leave gives you a good idea of what you can add during your trip. And this scale has plenty of other uses beyond travel. Use some sort of tote bag or grocery bag and now you can weigh parcels and other small items.
I purchased the scale after our previous scaled vanished. It had functioned well for years, but had a chintzy plasticky build that seemed ready to crack every time you used it. When I set out to replace it I wanted to find one that wasn't just cheap plastic, but something that felt like it could withstand the rigors of travel, last a long time, and was a pleasure to use. The result of that research was this scale, and honestly I couldn't be happier with the purchase. It's still lightweight, but feels great in your hand — sturdy and strong not flexing at all when in use. We'll soon be taking it with us on an African Safari (which has super strict weight requirements) and I expect it to perform exceptionally.
The first scale we received was off by more than 10% and i immediately contacted the seller. They were excellent with their customer service, responding the same day. they immediately sent a replacement for the one that was not working properly, which i received within two days, and the new one works great. I am very happy with this luggage scale. It is very easy to use...the handle is wide enough so that you have plenty of room for your hands to hold the scale out in front of you while weighing your luggage. the strap that goes around the handle of your luggage is very sturdy and the webbing is very thick and strong. the digital dial is easy to read and you are able to change the weights from lbs to kg very easily. i travel a lot and i'm sure this handy scale will be beneficial to weigh my luggage to make sure i am not over the desired 50 lb limit for most airlines.
